The No-Frills Virgin Mary

Scot McKnight has me thinking about Mary.  She was just a girl, or young lady who was living her life according to the Word of God.  All of the sudden, WHAM! her whole life changes due to one visit from an angel.
Mary was living her life by faith.  She did not realize while making choice after choice to remain sexually pure, that her obedience to God’s Word would result in the fulfilling of His plan for the birth of the Messiah.  Mary did not know that God’s specific will for her life was concomitant with God’s general will revealed in the Bible.  She was just a young lady who chose to obey God’s Word.
Even while being engaged to Joseph, she did not violate God’s command.  I’m sure living as a God fearing Israelite in the midst of pagan Roman occupation could be easily compared to living as a Bible believing Christian in the midst of the crooked and perverse nation, the United States of America.  Roman ways were full of debauchery.  To remain pure meant to be a spectacle to the world.  It would be the same today, except there are so very few who remain true to God’s Word in the same way that Mary did.
Think about this.  Had Mary disobeyed God’s command just one time, she would have disqualified herself from being a candidate for fulfilling the prophecies.  Mary did not know of God’s specific plan for her life, only God’s rule for all mankind.  She discovered God’s specific will for her life by being obedient to God’s revealed commands in the Bible.
Are we missing out on God’s specific will for our lives because we aren’t being obedient to what we already know to be God’s will?  Does God have awesome plans for our lives that will only happen if we obey what is written in the Word?  We need to teach our young children and teens that they will forfeit the plans that God has in store for them should they decide to disobey God’s commands concerning sexual purity.
Just a simple girl, obeying the 10 commandments.  That’s the No-Frills Virgin Mary.
