Relics of the Old World

Our former youth pastor came to our church the other night and gave a powerful message. While I won’t try to replicate the entire message, there was one point he brought out after quoting Malachi 3:16-18.

16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. 17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

He talked about the idea of a new heaven and new earth. That means that one day this present earth will be termed "the old earth". The passage in Malachi talks about those who will be like God’s chosen treasure. Although right now we are in the midst of a great battle between good and evil, one day those who belong to God will be on the other side of this war. They will be relics of the old world, antique treasures, if you will. Those who see us will wonder how we survived the old world.

Our position will be higher than the angels. Angels will gasp as we walk by. "There goes one of those humans!" With awe in their voice, "Should we (gulp), talk to them." What a struggle to stay pure in this world of sin! But one day it will be worth it all. Every time we submit to Christ in the midst of this present war, we will not regret it.

What will the new heaven and new earth be like? We can try to imagine, but what God has in story for us will blow us away. God is actively pursuing at this very moment some who can be saved out of this present evil world, so that they may be His treasure in the next world.

Have fun and stay busy – Luke 19:13
