Orange Seatbelts

The postal vehicles that we drive (LLV) have orange seatbelts in them.  There is a reason why these seatbelts are bright orange.  Think for a minute, why would the postal service make the seatbelts in these vehicles orange, but everything else is white, blue, or red?  The first answer that probably comes to mind is so that when a postal carrier gets in that they will see the bright orange and remember to put the seatbelt on.  Close, but not quite.

The seatbelts in the LLVs are bright orange so that a supervisor can easily identify when performing street supervision if the carrier is wearing the seatbelt like they are supposed to.  The bright color to draw attention is not for the benefit of the one wearing it, but the one who is overseeing.  At first glance the supervisor has the ability to see if the carrier is doing their job in the prescribed manner.  Since it is so easy for the supervisor to see whether or not the carrier is wearing the seatbelt, this becomes initiative for the carrier to choose to put it on.

There are certain commands that make Christianity so blatantly obvious.  Let’s just take the difference between a kind person and an unkind person.  Standing in line at McDonald’s, Walgreen’s, or Target, it’s obvious who is demonstrating kindness and who is not.  Seatbelt application:  It’s not for the benefit of yourself when you put on kindness, it’s for the benefit of those who identify you as a follower of Christ.  They can plainly see if you belong to Him or not based on the attitude that you decide to put on.  Some people are wasting time putting an angel pin on their sweater, a cross around their neck, or a bumper sticker on their car and not putting on something so simply Christian as a kind attitude.

Just like a mail carrier should put on their seatbelt to identify themselves as a carrier who performs their job safely, Christians should put on the proper attitude (starting with kindness) to identify themselves as TRUE followers of Jesus Christ.  You never know when the supervisor is going to show up to make sure you are performing your job.  It’s bright orange so it will be painfully obvious within one minute of you haven’t put it on.  If you have started your day without it, take five minutes and adjust your attitude.  The world is watching.

Great commentary. We all need reminders once in a while. Attitude goes a long way. Choose to be happy and you will be.

Darrin, It\’s refreshing to read good things, encouraging things, instead of all of the bad news the media bogs us down with.Tracey-of the Redheaded Mind 😉
