Debunking Gehenna as a burning garbage dump

I’ve decided to post a link to this article because it has me thinking.  The idea of Gehenna being a garbage dump outside the city of Jerusalem is something that I have heard over and over again.  I thought it was an established fact.  However, scholars have researched this and found no archealogical evidence that this was the case.  There is one Jewish scholar, Rabbi David Kimchi, who wrote in 1200 stating that it was a garbage dump with the fires continually burning, but he cites no source to back his claim.

This causes scholars to go back and ask the question again as to why Jesus would use the term Gehenna to describe eternal hellfire.  Todd Bolen is the one doing the exposing, along with other scholars, and he has some views as to why this term would be used.  He goes back to Jeremiah 7:31-32 and Isaiah 30:33 to link it to the pagan practice of child sacrifice by fire.  Perhaps pagan is not the right word because it was the Israelites performing the child sacrifices.  I would encourage you to take a look at this article at this link here and the more detailed work at this link here.
