Walter Martin was post-trib

Theological juggernaut, Walter Martin, was not pre-trib.  I remember when I wanted to start reading about how different cults like Mormonism, the Watchtower, and Islam fell short in comparison to the Word of God, every commentary seemed to quote The Kingdom of the Cults by Walter Martin. I thought, why would I read all these other commentaries which quote this book, when I can just get this book?  So I bought and read The Kingdom of the Cults.  I remember being distinctly influenced by his positions on the deity of Christ and the way of salvation.  It was specifically how he brought the truths of the scriptures out in comparison to the beliefs of the false cults.

It came to my attention several years ago that Walter Martin was not pre-trib.  I searched for some answers about what position he actually held, but came up with none.  His ministry fell right in the middle of pre-trib being at its most popular.  To hold this position would mean certain unpopularity within the church.  Yet I found a message that he preached on youtube.  I wanted to share it here for those who remember this brave man of God’s ministry.  Walter Martin made divisions without being divisive.  He rightly divided the Word of Truth placing truth on one side and error on the other, but he did it in a Spirit of love.  His manner concerning eschatology was no different.  So here is a resource currently available on youtube.  The video says it is posted with permission.  It is in 6 parts.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Part 6

I mention that Walter Martin presents the classic post-trib view quite well.  His explanation of the scriptures contain many truth that I would affirm.  I would only add that while the church will experience the great tribulation, we will be spared the eschatological wrath of God which Christ brings with Him at His coming.  Enjoy the sermon, but it’s audio only, meaning it’s not a live video.

  1. For every theologians who is post trib, there are just as many who are pre trib. Martin was a good man of God, but like all men of God, he can’t be expected to fully understand all of the Holy Scriptures.

    • Certainly. My point was not to say he completely understands the scriptures, but to point out that here was a man of God who interacted with PreTribbers like Hal Lindsey with no good rebuttal from him on his pretrib position. You will find that included in the audio. It’s a good listen. I would recommend listening to it in its entirety and then comment further. Thanks.
